The missionaries that worked in Texas in the 18th and 19th centuries and built missions (including Mission San Antonio de Valero - The Alamo) which needed water. The Espada Aquaduct was built to serve Mission San Francisco de la Espada located in the current city of San Antonio. It was completed in 1745 and is still in use today.
