First Visit: November 1994

Two pictures from Florida tell about its past and present. Above is a detail from Fort Pickens, an army post completed in 1834 to defend the Pensacola Bay and its Navy Yard. Forts such as these were in use through World War II all around the country. It is now part of Gulf Islands National Seashore. Below is a beach scene. From the picture it is almost impossible to tell that the sand "cliff" is only about three feet high or that a late November chill is in the air. And that's probably why so many of us go to Florida each year.
