Arizona

First visit: May 1996

In Arizona tons of petrified wood can be found in a wide north-south strip in the eastern part of the state. A small section of this is preserved as the Petrified Forest National Park. The sandstone continues to wear away exposing the remains of large petrified trees such as this one. Unfortunately many tons of petrified wood are stolen from the park each year.
